FAQs

We know you have a lot of choices when it comes to selecting an orthodontist, and you may have a few questions for us before you make your decision. Here are the answers to some common questions our new patients ask. If you don’t see yours listed, please feel free to send us an email or call our friendly practice for immediate assistance.

How do I get emergency orthodontic care?

The first step in getting emergency care is to call Wigal Orthodontics directly and let someone on our staff help. If you are suffering from a life-threatening emergency, please call 911 immediately.

Most hospital emergency rooms, mobile clinics, and urgent care centers aren’t equipped to handle orthodontic or dental emergencies, and if you go to one of these establishments you are unlikely to be treated.

Orthodontic emergencies can often be an indicator of improper care, so be sure to avoid high risk behaviors that could cause damage to your braces, including eating hard, sticky, or chewy foods, not wearing appropriate mouthguards as prescribed, and not always practicing excellent oral hygiene.

How many orthodontists are there in Columbus?

There are 59 orthodontists located in Columbus, OH. At Wigal Orthodontics, Dr. Wigal and Dr. Kluemper have decades of combined experience in helping improve the appearance and function of the smiles of patients of all ages. Whether you’d like traditional braces or you’re interested in learning more about the benefits of Invisalign, we offer a variety of solutions to correct your alignment and bite, all the while improving your appearance, confidence, and overall oral health.

What is the best way to find a cosmetic dentist?

While there’s no single designation that qualifies a dentist to be a cosmetic dentist, there are a number of organizations that offer advanced training in cosmetic dentistry. In general, it is best to search for a dentist with extensive involvement in one of these organizations.

Nearly all dental schools as well as many other organizations also offer a variety of excellent continuing education programs in cosmetic dentistry.

How can I make a same-day appointment with an orthodontist?

The fastest and easiest way to do this is to call us directly, as sending an email or filling out a webform will not get you an answer as quickly. Furthermore, a phone call is much more effective at allowing our staff to better understand your situation and get you in for the best care as soon as possible.

The goal of any same-day appointment is for us to assess your situation, eliminate what is causing the pain, and finalize a treatment plan for the future. In some cases, we may be able to provide more advanced treatment at a same-day appointment.

What level of education is required to be an orthodontist?

All dentists here in the United States must earn either a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or a Doctor of Dental Sciences (DDS) degree from one of the nation’s 67 accredited dental schools.

Acceptance into dental school requires the student to have earned a bachelor's degree and very high grades in a major that is heavy in math and sciences. Dental school is a three-year program that combines both hands-on and classroom learning.

Following dental school, some dentists continue their education by earning one of twelve specializations (including orthodontics) recognized by the American Dental Association (ADA). These require an additional three or more years of dental school training.

Following dental school, all dentists are required to complete a certain number of continuing education hours to keep their dental license current.
